ROMA In Their Own Words

September 2010

  • How and when did you find ROMA?

Beginning of 2007, someone mentioned ROMA to me as a relaxed place to be. Starting with hanging out in the tavern, I slowly discovered that RP was not all to bad, quite fun actually. Being a Roman sounded okay with me. So I got me a toga and had another drink ;)

  • What attracted you to ROMA? What made you come back?

The people I met in ROMA made me come back. Somehow it felt like it could be a home here. I always thought: who needs a home in SL? That started to change. I heard about ROMA Subura opening soon. I thought maybe I could build a home there. And so it happened. Since then it has become a home to me, where I met and still meet) wonderfull people, funny people, inspiring people, creative people and many more types of people.

My building aspirations, combined with the new interest in Roman history, made me start building the latrina. A social place. On the day it was finished, Popea walked in and since then we are close friends. We worked together on many projects and builds, and have the luck to be able to have our shop in ROMA Insula now.

  • What do you do when you’re in ROMA?

Meeting people in the first place! But there have also been times that I was only working on new creations... The combination makes it interesting.

  • How would you describe the ROMA Community?

I always find the community friendly and open. I keep coming across people with sincere interest in ROMA and it's citizens. Many citizens / residents are here for a long time, still having fun. That means something.

  • How do you describe ROMA to your friends and family outside of SL?

ROMA is a different place than many other places in SL. The mix of the great way it looks, the historical educational values, the fact that it's a constant factor in SL for years, the community and the open mindedness of people here is unique.

  • What is your favorite spot in the ROMA Estate?

I find myself coming back to the square always. There stories start, new people get interested in ROMA, friendships are born, fun is made.

  • Do you use SL and ROMA for socializing, roleplay, or something different?

Socializing, roleplay sometimes, and expressing the new hobby that was born here: building and trying to be creative doing so.

  • What will ROMA and Second Life look like five years from now? (2015)

Good question. SL might become a '3D Facebook', since social media are growing so fast these days. But what I hope is that is will not be that in the first place. It should remain a place to express creativity, thoughts and dreams, without the 'meat market' effect that many social media have. Sincere interest in subjects are more important ways to find people that share that interest. I hope I express well... With Torin as captain of the ship, I am sure he will try to stay on top of new developments and add new technologies to ROMA when they are there. I can only encourage that.

  • Anything else you would like to add?

There are times when I'd like to be much more active in helping the community grow. Unfortunaltely, RL does not always allow me. The last two weeks or so I found myself back in Subura/ROMA some more - less in Insula only. And it feels good to meet up with old friends, make new, talk more, roleplay, be a Roman again hahaha. And: keep up the good work Torin!
