  • January 5 — ROMA Maritima and ROMA Imperium sims automatically transferred from Openspace to Homestead by LL as part of their program to reclassify Openspace sims.

  • January 15 — With Angelia out of town for a family crisis, MajorMatt and Ludovik convene an emergency Collegium meeting to cover the upcoming Paganala festival.

  • January 25 — Senate meeting, Serafina Itano is inducted into group in the Throne Room, with a meeting afterward in the Curia.
  • January 25 — ROMA begins to have a problem with individuals from other ancient sims coming to the plaza and trying to entice new visitors to go to their sims instead of visit ROMA. Several perpetrators are banned.
  • January 26 — Maali Beck begins to send out invitations to her and Achille Back's wedding on February 24.
    "Landmarks for the wedding and reception of Maali Beck & Achille Back- Tuesday, 24 February 2008. Please join us for our wedding @ 13:00 SLT in ROMA. Wedding will be held in the Throne Room of the Emperor's palace. Reception will be held outside the Throne Room in the Gardens of Maecenas.   • January 27 — Nemesis Hydraconis moves into the Subura and takes the double plot which had originally been rented by Betty Hyde from the founding of the Subura (#13/14). Nemesis then continues to perpetrate a long-standing fraud in ROMA with this new alt account. We will eventually learn she is the same person who undertook a fraud in January 2007 when, as Tullia Lanzius, fooled individuals into sending get well wishes and gifts to a person said to be hurt critically in a car accident. This accident never happened, and the individuals behind the fraud enjoyed preying on the goodwill of ROMA Citizens.

  • January 29 — Serafina Itano offers to become a Procurator and be on duty during European-friendly times. She is immediately accepted.
  • January 30 — The Legion has a parade in Roma Centro sim.
  • January 30 — Several ROMA Citizens begin to raise doubts over the identity of Nemesis Hydraconis and other possible alts.
  • January 30 — ROMA Swim party in the ROMA Maritima sim, 8pm.
  • January 31 — Theatrum brainstorming meeting in the Subura Latrina.
  • January 31 — Half of the docks in ROMA Maritima mysteriously disappear. A rollback and sim investigation by LL are not able to figure out what happened. Torin rebuilds the docks.
  • January 31 — With Angelia still out of world, MajorMatt and Ludovik organize a Collegium meeting to organize the upcoming Lupercalia Festival.

February

  • February 7 — Mediamaster.com, the free music streaming service, goes out of business and takes several personalized ROMA radio stations offline.
  • February 8 — Students from Willowdale Elementary School visit ROMA. It is not known whether this is the school in Omaha NE or Warminster PA.
  • February 8 — Ludovik Cazenove takes over the IN SVO ANNO merchant program. An announcement is put on the blog and website:

March

  • March 1 — There is a ROMA officer meeting in ROMA Imperium sim to confront Nemesis Hydraconis at 11am. Nemesis is told it will be a Theatrum Meeting. Nemesis claims she can not attend, but sends "a friend"- an alt named Liquid Gold. When confronted, Liquid runs away and logs off. All known alts (over 35) are then immediately banned from ROMA and all property foreclosed. Investigation into her many, many alts continue. The ROMA community is informed with a blog post.
  • March 3 — Nemesis, on an alt account, sends an IM to Torin confessing to the elaborate fraud:
    "Persipina Rhiadra: Salve Torin. All my accounts are under cancellation now. Some are premium (including this one) and will continue to exist until the subscription runs out, but they are dormant and will not be seen in Roma anymore. I'm not sure if my last message to Grumpy Minotaur came through, so I confirm forfeiting the plot and boat dock rentals in the name of Nemesis Hydraconis and Barbara Flinders with immediate effect. These accounts are already cancelled, so please trash any objects which may still be on the plots. The confusion and destortion I caused are reflecting my inner problems, for which I'm under professional treatment now. It was never my intension to hurt anybody, but I am aware now that I did. Words can never justify my behaviour. I'm deeply ashamed, not because I'm catched, I expected this to happen and it was the final motivation I needed for seeking professional help. I'm ashamed because I deceived so many people. Please leave the Cornelii familia group in SL so that the group will be erased from the database.   • March 4 — Franck Gazov returns to SL and ROMA after an absence.

  • March 5 — The Cyrenaica sim, another ancient sim on the grid competing against ROMA, closes due to financial reasons.
  • March 7 — Britannia Prima and Britannia Secunda in the rented Max Summer sim open to compete against ROMA. Its architects mistakenly use their ‘ROMA Citizens’ tags when rezzing its buildings. They will last a few months.
  • March 7 — Extensive abuse reports are filed against Nemesis and all alts by the managers of ROMA.
  • March 10 — Achille Back creates new togas to be given free in the Customs House.
  • March 14 — The Legion announces promotions:

April

  • April 1 — A "Clean Out Your Inventory" party is hosted by Spaciva in the park next to the Subura Comitium.
  • April 4 — The Collegium holds a graduation ceremony:

  • April 4 — A RL minor attempts to join the Legion. He is banned and reported to LL immediately as underage.
  • April 8 — A Homeless Romans party is hosted by Popea and Lef at the Subura villa of Ulysses:
    "Homeless Romans Contest and Party - Wednesday April 8. We heard that the Emperor is not happy lately. Citizens are littering too much in the streets. It's a mess and it's time to clean up. And he told us, he is not pleased with the fact that some houses in Subura are unoccupied for many months now. If nothing is done about these situations, he will be forced to raise taxes! So, fellow citizens, IT"S TIME WE ACT! We came up with an idea to clean the streets and at the same time help homeless people to get a free place to sleep for the night. At Wednesday April 8, at 1PM SLT, we gather at plot 2 in Roma Subura and we enter the empty domus there. As good squatters do, we will bring mattrasses for the night (we will provide them ;) Cleaning Contest: You should 'collect' a piece of garbage and bring it to the house. You give it to us and we will rez it for all to see. Then we all vote and decide who is the winner. (You can gather a piece of garbage in the whole of Second Life. Just make sure it's transferrable. Homeless Dressing Contest: We will also give a prize to the best dressed homeless Roman, so look in the back of you closets or behine the Fullonica.   • April 25 — Lef and Popea downsize their holdings in the Subura.
  • April 27 — Ongoing flea market in the ROMA Fort to benefit the ROMA Pro Vita group comes to an end.

May

  • May 2 — Torin and Angelia publish a notecard detailing how ROMA will handle the Mature ratings change by LL. The Lupanar private rooms (the last remains of Caligula’s Pleasure Palace) are demolished.
    How the upcoming changes regarding adult affect ROMA
    1. First, be sure to read what Angelia wrote above explaining why the changes are happening, and why LL is now attempting to censor sexual and extremely violent content on the grid.
    2. ROMA will remain 'Mature' and not go 'Adult'. This is for two reasons: A) remaining 'mature' under the new LL system requires only a few minor changes to the overall way ROMA is run and B) we do not wish to exclude unverified accounts from ROMA, many of which are students and teachers affiliated with universities and colleges and museums who usually do not link those accounts with credit card info, etc to verify them. ROMA, however will remain a place where only players above 18 are welcome.
    3. The rooms under the Lupanar will be closed. ROMA will no longer offer a place for avatars to engage in virtual sex. The 12 Tables will be changed to reflect that as a ‘mature’ zoned area, we can no longer offer such a space. (The rooms were rarely used so this is in our opinion no big loss).
    4. The Hot Springs in Transtiberim will no longer be clothing optional. The ‘mature’ designation will no longer allow us to allow avatars to engage in photorealistic nudity and all avatars will need remain clothed in ROMA. For the moment this also includes bare female breasts (the LL policy regarding nudity is still being worked out, so this may change to allow some forms of nudity depending on which way LL goes regarding ‘mature’ sims).
    5. Merchants selling items where nudity or sexual acts are depicted will no longer be able to list them for sale in uncensored form. Right now we will allow, for example, images of ancient erotica to be sold if the images in the vendor are censored to reflect the new LL policy. So put black bars on the advertised image, and sell the uncensored in a manner that it can not be seen until the customer rezzes it at home. Erotic, sexual themed and extremely violent objects can not be advertised in classified, profile picks, or external web pages as being sold in ROMA. We will change the merchant agreements to reflect this.
    6. For Subura residents, our Subura rules already stipulate that sexual matters need to remain indoors where they are not visible to the general public. Everyone knows this already, and the Subura residents have been exemplary in adhering to this rule. This policy will remain in effect, with the added caveat that LL now forbids them from advertising public parties or events at their Subura plot if they have sexual themed objects such as erotic art, sex beds, BDSM equipment, etc. This includes skybox material that will be out of sight. It can’t be on the parcel period if you have a public event. You are still able to have such objects if they are private and kept out of the sight of passer-bys.
    7. As for violence, our roleplay does not involve realistic or extreme violence, so I do not see more than some minor tweaks in this area. The Ludus fights and Legion displays are educational (and it would help make this point if the Legion, Legio, and Ludus groups used the words ‘educational’ and ‘recreation’ more in their events and notices. Let us ‘play up’ our educational components.). Legion and Ludus members should refrain from using any gadget or effect that is particularly bloody or gruesome. ROMA is not a combat-oriented roleplay land, and just enjoying a combat system in its place (already spelled out in the 12 Tables and regulated in the sims and by the groups) does not cross us over from ‘mature’ to ‘adult’.
    8. Roleplay and roleplay events should also not incorporate overt sexual or violent themes. Our roleplay rules already forbid sexual slavery (of the Gor and BDSM variety) so that will continue to be in force.

  • May 3 — The Legion begins to cull inactive members:

  • May 5 — The total raised for ROMA PRO VITA, the ROMA Relay for Life team, is allounced:
    "Thanks to the hard work of the organizers and the generosity of our citizens, the ROMA PRO VITA Flea Market that was held in the ROMA Fort was a great success! Over L$36,500 was raised, bringing in over $141.00 US to help fight cancer and fund cancer research."
  • May 8 — The Legion holds a tournament:
    "Thanks to all the members that took part at this event! All made a great job and we were able to have fun. The final was beetween Alekso and Octavian and after a close fight Alekso won. It is to appreciate very much that Octavian, that is a recruit, he was able to reach the final match.   • May 9 — Longtime friend-of-ROMA Caliandris Pendragon offers a special Roman dress and sandals she made to ROMA. These will be used as a prize during a festival event.
  • May 9 — Spaciva Ivanova comes up with the idea to turn the Plaza fountain into a donation spot. Torin makes this happen.

  • May 22 — Two sims of the SL Roman Empire (a competing ancient estate) are offered for sale due to financial concerns. Its owner/emperor steps down as emperor but remains owner of the remaining sims.
  • May 23 — ROMA Imperium/Insula is opened to the public for the duration of the month. Previously it was the private residence of Torin and the Emperor, off limits to all other citizens except by invitation. Now until June 1, Citizens can wander in and get a last look at the imperial residence before it is wiped.

    "The Emperor and I must bid farewell to our private ROMA Imperium sim because our ratio of "time spent in it" to "amount paid for it" was not in our favor. So something new and exciting will come to the ROMA Imperium sim (now renamed ROMA Insula) on June 1. So for the rest of this week, the sim will be open to all ROMA Citizen members. Come stroll through the Emperor's private grounds before they go away. The troll who guards the sea gate near Maritima has orders to let all Citizens through the gate.”

  • June — The chariot-racing Agitatores group is founded by Alekso Minotaur.
  • June 1 — Popea and Lef take control of the ROMA Insula sim.
  • June 1 — To support "Paint SL Purple Day", the buildings in the main sim of ROMA are colored purple.
    "June 1st will be 'PAINT SL PURPLE DAY' for Relay for Life. Purple is the color representing the waiting that those who have or know someone who has cancer endures. Waiting is perhaps one of the biggest facts of life when it comes to dealing with cancer. To show our support and recognition we're going PURPLE ! Come and visit Roma. All the streets are purple. Some inhabitants even painted their houses purple. Make a nice tour. There will be also great fundraising activities for Relay For Life, battle against cancer in fort Augusta. 10.30 am: opening by captain Spaciva Ivanova from team Roma Pro Vita, telling about the purpose of this day. 11.00 am and 3.00 pm (SL-times): fashion show purple clothes.     "GLADIATORS REBELLION !! (Roleplay event) wednesday 24th June 2009. A revolt is planned to obtain more rights (and also some rich prizes). But the XIII Legio has been sent from the Senate of ROMA to stop it! A battle will take place at the campus Martius (field of Mars) right outside the gate of Ostia the 24th of June. SCENARIO: The revolt of the gladiators starts at Postus Ostiae, they plan to go to ROMA to demonstrate their intentions. The XIII Legion is defending the access to ROMA from transtiberim. The meeting point is the campus Martius, a green wide area outside Ostia, on the road to ROMA. WEAPONS: The battle system and the weapons will not be the Berseker and the gladiators' weapons, but the BCS and the Gladius from the Legion. Same script as the legion gladius, but different look for the gladiator's weapons. (they will be delivered for free to the gladiators) OUTFITS: The gladiators will use their own gladiator outfits, and the soldiers will wear their legionary kits.   • June 9 — After a period of building, Popea Heron and Lef Leven open their new main store on the ROMA Insula sim to the public.
  • June 10 — Torin posts a new ROMA YouTube video. It is called RGW, standing for "ROMAns Go Wild" and is a parody of both the "Girls/Guys Gone Wild" DVD's and the new LL censorship policies. Naked footage comes from the February 22 Lupercalia Grand Feast.
  • June 23 — Torin adds Bigae made by Alekso Minotaur to the Hippodrome racetrack.

July

  • July 6 — Paol Franizzi exhibits his artwork in a gallery inside Subura plot #12, the Basilica Cornelia:
    "Our Tesserarius Paol Franizzi (Aurelius Sejanus Glaucus) will show his artworks on Wednesday 8th at 1.00 PM in the new Basilica Cornelia, Suburra, plot n°12. All the legio is invited to the opening party. Decurio peter Woody (Petrus Cornelius Silvanus) will host the exhibit in the basilica for the entire week and offers that space for similar events, in the future."
  • July 15 — Paol Franizzi's exhibit in the Subura Basilica Cornelia has a closing ceremony at 1pm.
  • July 18 — Relay for Life group ROMA PRO VITA builds and operates a Roman bath build in the grid's Relay camp.

August

  • August 7 — A long-standing rude griefer duo are unmasked trying to sneak back into ROMA with alts. These are banned.

  • August 18 — Torin has the idea for the ROMA Achievement System. He begins to talk to the ROMA Managers about it.
  • August 21 — Torin, Tonina, and MajorMatt meet to discuss the creation of the ROMA Achievement System. (Angelia is not able to make it)
  • August 21 — On the Citizens Blog, Torin posts a teaser about "something new" coming to ROMA soon. There is much speculation. It is not revealed at this time, but this will be the ROMA Achievement System [RAS]:
    "The ROMA Management Team is working on a brand new feature for ROMA and its Citizens. We can't tell you much about it yet, but we predict:
    • It will bring a great new dimension to your time in ROMA.

  • September 9 — Torin celebrates his fourth rez-day in SL. The ROMA Managers throw him a party in the ROMA Basilica.
  • September 12 — The Legion reorganizes the Cohors Equitata and appoints Revo Morales as its newest member.
  • September 13 — ROMA Senate meeting, 10:30am.
  • September 14 — Torin adds several sculptie busts made by Achille Back to the facade of the Capitoline Museum, and on the porch of the Curia in the Forum.
  • September 14 — Life Juliesse and peter Woody organize a Roleplay Wednesday event from their Gens Cornelia Subura house (originally planned for the 9th):
    "Salvete! Are you ready to show us your best toga? Well,if it's so we are waiting for you! ...In the Basilica Cornelia we will take the LUDUS NARCISI event, a contest based upon the beauty of yours amazing togas!The winner will be the best Roman in Toga one for the women one for the men. The prize is 1500 lindens for the firsts arrived and several rich prizes for the others! You will have to walk on a board for 2 minutes in order to let the others vote for you.   • September 18 — www.rpgempires.org, the website and forum of SL Roman Empire (who saw itself as a competitor of ROMA) shuts down. The original owner of SL Roman Empire and associated sims has already sold all sims to others in a giant liquidation of SL assets. Other owners have taken over the running of the SL Roman Empire sim. It will last until March 2010.
  • September 18 — Torin announces that he has rebuilt the interior of the Baths of Caracalla lobby. This includes a new staircase and fountain.
  • September 19 — First day of the Ludi Romani Festival 09
  • September 20 — Second day of the Ludi Romani Festival 09
  • September 21 — The LL Adult Content changes are made official.
  • September 22 — Vectus Margulis adds a skybox archery range above the Ostia Fort.
  • September 22 — A major rebuild of the north-eastern quarter of ROMA is undertaken by Torin. This will cause great disruption of this area for over a week, and many large builds will be moved or removed, but the rebuild will bring several benefits to ROMA:
    From the ACTA ROMA:
    1. The Circus Maximus Hippodrome has been moved to the edge of the ROMA sim and parts rebuilt in order to accommodate a new seating platform. Spectators will now be able to sit across the sim line from the racers during races, hopefully reducing the lag for the charioteers.
    2. Visitors can access the entrance of the new Hippodrome via a new plaza behind the Markets of Trajan. More development will occur in this area in the future.
    3. The Imperial Palace and its fantastic mosaic by Orion Sinister has been shifted to the east, allowing it to tower more majestically over the racetrack, like the historical Domus Domitiana towered over the Roman Circus Maximus.
    4. The Gardens of Maecenas has been redesigned and now includes a pool based on the canopus at Hadrian's Villa.
    5. At the southern end of the Garden is a new classical pavillion. It will be developed further in the future, but for now creates more of a classical skyline from the Plaza, where most people start their exploration of ROMA.
    6. The Theater of Dionysus has been moved to overlook the Transtiberim sim and has been redesigned.
    7. The Theater has gotten an attached quadroporticus. The golden statue of Julian has been moved here from the Forum.
    8. Trajan's Column in the Forum has been enlarged, redesigned, and moved to the west of the Temple of Jupiter. Now when you climb atop it you will be above the clouds in ROMA and have a great view of the sims.
  • September 25 — A special Ave Weekend party is held to honor the Legion:
    "Salvete all Legion-Members! We feel honoured and proud, that Maali Beck starts the traditional Ave-Weekend-Party in Roma again with a party especially dedicated to our Legion. The party will be held tomorrow, Friday 25th September at 1:00 PM, at Campus Martius. For this event Maali organized a singer for live entertainment, which is scheduled for 1 pm. For this reason our weekly Friday’s training will be shifted for one hour from 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm. So dress in your uniforms, polish your sandals and join this special Legion-Ave-Weekend-Party to socialize, dance, meet old friends and find new ones!   • September 25 — A host of avatars are banned from ROMA for 1) filming adult "movies" (really just snapshot collages) in ROMA without permission of the owner and in violation of the estate's mature rating rules, 2) for including Subura resident builds in their production without the owners' permissions and 3) for including the images of Subura Citizens without their consent. The filmmakers, though rude and unprofessional when contacted, agree to remove these images from their production.
  • Annales/2009/September26 — A surprise Scribae meeting is held after a Scholastica meeting.
  • September 27 — After a summer hiatus, the Legionare of the Month contest is re-established by the Legion. Megara Shieldmaiden takes the award for September.

  • November 1 — An impromptu Scribae Meeting is held to discuss the start of the ACTA ROMA.
  • November 1 — The ACTA ROMA is announced on the Citizen blog and in world:
    "The ROMA Scribae group will now publish a bi-weekly newsletter notecard detailing the news from ROMA. The "Acta ROMA" will contain stories about ROMA's community, useful information, group news, historical and cultural showcases, classifieds, and other content. It will help keep all ROMA info in one place. Are you interested in helping to write for this newsletter? Contact editor *Spaciva Ivanova*. We need reporters for a third week of November inaugural issue."
  • November 2 — For his efforts at the Battle of Zama event on October 16, Revo Morales is awarded the rank of Optio in the Legion.
  • November 7 — The Legionnaire of the Month in the Legion is Miles Gianni Lupindo.
  • November 8 — ROMA Senate meeting

  • November 14 — The first edition of the ACTA ROMA is published.
  • November 19 — Popea and Lef dissolve the LUDUS DACICUS GLADIATORII group. Over the next few days, they, Torin, and Alekso Minotaur discuss the creation of a new group that will incorporate the Agitatores and a new gladiator group under Alekso and peter Woody. This becomes the LVDI ROMANI group.

  • December 14 — Torin issues a call for snapshots to furnish an exhibit on the history of the ROMA Subura planned for the new year.
  • December 17 — Torin redesigns the interior of the Curia to accommodate a new tripartite meeting structure coming to the building in the new year.
